WIGS & CAPS

What is Chemo Headwear (Wigs & Caps)?

Hair loss is a common problem among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Potent chemotherapy drugs migrate throughout the body, eradicating cancerous cells. Unfortunately, chemotherapy damages healthy hair follicles, resulting in the hair falling out. Loss of hair is a prevalent adverse effect of the continuous use of chemotherapy drugs. Some cancer patients who receive chemotherapy may even notice a loss of hair from their eyebrows and eyelashes.

Still, a range of chemo headwear, such as turbans, scarves, wigs and other caps, is available.

What Chemo Headwear is available?

Chemo Headwear is created to conceal hair loss in cancer patients. Most CANSA Care centres are equipped with wig banks that store authentic wigs made of human hair and artificially made hair for those with hair loss.
The following Chemo Headwear is available:

  • Turbans are simple, easy to wear, and fashionable for cancer patients. Turbans are comprised of soft fabric and remain versatile in terms of styling. Turbans wrap around the head and may even be worn as sleeping caps.
  • Scarves are classy, sophisticated fashion accessories that can be worn in many ways, around the head or waist. Both untied and pre-tied options in a variety of fabrics are available to choose from.
  • Wigs help restore self-confidence in women suffering from hair loss, primarily as a result of cancer. There are a variety of wigs to select from, all in different colours and styles. Visit the Wig Resources Page to help choose a wig you identify with. Rohi Mastectomy Care provides a step-by-step guide on selecting the most appropriate wig that meets your expectations. In addition, we offer a free wig consultation whereby a highly experienced wig consultant is on standby to help select a wig to your liking and standards.

5 Must-have Chemo Headwear Items

  • Sleep cap: A sleep cap makes up for lost hair by covering, protecting and providing warmth to the scalp. You can wear a sleep cap to reduce night chills and keep your head warm in the evening.
  • Basic beanie/turban: Basic beanies and turbans are ideal protective coverings for the head. A standard beanie or turban can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. These hats also function as sleeping caps
  • Sun protection hat: Due to chemotherapy, the scalp is vulnerable to harmful UV rays from sun exposure. A wide-brimmed hat helps protect the scalp from harmful sun damage. The fabric of the hat may even be SPF-protected, reducing the risk of potential damage to the scalp.
  • Hat liner: A hat liner comprised of soft yet durable materials such as bamboo and cotton is a terrific item to carry in your purse. Fortunately, a hat liner prevents increased irritation to the scalp and provides full head coverage.
  • Slip-on/Pre-tied scarf: Slip-on or pre-tied scarves are excellent options for daily, everyday activities and formal functions. Scarves (slip-on and pre-tied options) are lightweight and easy to carry and wear at your convenience.
